La foto di al Shishani, suggerisce che egli sia stato la mente dell'assedio come comandante del settore settentrionale di Isis in Siria e in Iraq. E' considerato uno dei leader più influenti dell'opposizione siriana, dopo una serie di assalti a basi militari vicino Aleppo, in particolare la conquista di una base aerea governo nell'agosto dello scorso anno, che ha incrementato la sua posizione tra i combattenti. Di etnia cecena ma georgiano di nascita,d opo essere cresciuto da un padre cristiano e una madre musulmana in Georgia, Pankisi Gorge, a -Shishani ha servito l'esercito georgiano finanziato dagli Usa, arrivando al grado di sergente. Con un odio profondo per il Cremlino, ha giocato un ruolo nella guerra Russia-Georgia del 2008, spiando i carri armati russi e riferendo la loro posizioni all’artiglieria georgiana. Dopo il suo impegno in guerra, Al Shishani contrasse la tubercolosi nel 2010 e fu successivamente dimesso dall'esercito. Divenne sempre più disilluso dalla sua vita a casa, incapace di trovare un lavoro, dopo che la madre morì di cancro, prese la decisione di andare a combattere in Siria.

The photos of al-Shishani, a Georgian-born ethnic Chechen, suggest that he was the mastermind of the siege as the commander of the northern sector of Isis in Syria and Iraq. He is considered one of the most influential leaders of the Syrian opposition after a series of assaults on military bases near Aleppo, specifically as the mastermind of the capture of a government airbase in August last year which boosted his standing among comrades. After being raised by a Christian father and a Muslim mother in Georgia's Pankisi Gorge, al-Shishani served in the US-funded Georgian army, rising to the rank of sergeant. With a deep hatred for the Kremlin, he played a role in the 2008 Russia-Georgia War, spying on Russian tanks and relaying their positions back to Georgian artillery. After his wartime efforts, Al-Shishani contracted tuberculosis in 2010 and was subsequently discharged from the army. He became increasingly disillusioned by life at home, unable to find a job, after his mother passed away with cancer. This was to inform his later decision to take up arms in Syria.
