16 arrestati in connessione con la lettera che chiedeva le dimissioni di Xi
Le autorità cinesi hanno riferito di aver arrestato 16 persone tra cui il redattore capo di un sito web statale in relazione ad una misteriosa lettera, pubblicata on-line che, oltre a criticare il presidente cinese Xi Jinping ne chiedeva le dimissioni.
Quattro degli arrestati, due top editor e due tecnici, lavoravano per il sito web statale Wujie, che ha pubblicato la lettera il 4 marzo, il giorno in cui si apriva un conclave politico annuale a Pechino. Altri 10 che lavorano con una società di tecnologica correlata sono stati portati via.
Wen Yunchao, un attivista cinese che vive a New York, ha detto al New York Times che i suoi genitori e il fratello minore nel sud della Cina erano scomparsi Martedì 22 marzo. La polizia, secondo Wen, ha minacciato la sua famiglia che deveva dire quello che sapeva della lettera.
Le autorità cinesi hanno anche arrestato un noto scrittore freelance di nome Jia Jia, 35 anni, pochi minuti prima che salisse a bordo di un volo per Hong Kong, il 15 marzo i familiari e gli amici di Jia hanno detto che lui non aveva nulla a che fare con la lettera. Venerdì 25 nella notte, un post è apparso sull’account wechat di Jia, implicando che era stato liberato. "Grazie a tutti", diceva.
Jia è un amico di Ouyang Hongliang, redattore capo del sito web che ha pubblicato la lettera. Secondo il New York Times, le persone con conoscenza della situazione dicono che Jia avrebbe chiamato Ouyang chiedendogli di togliere la lettera di Wujie dopo aver notato che circolava on-line.
La lettera pubblicata sul sito Wujie News, di proprietà congiunta di SEEC Media Group, Alibaba e governo dello Xinjiang, chiedeva al presidente Xi Jinping di dimettersi per la sua incapacità senza precedenti di affrontare i problemi e per la crisi in tutte le sfere politiche, economiche, ideologiche e culturali.
La lettera menzionava anche il fatto che la sicurezza del presidente e della sua famiglia potrebbe essere in pericolo, se non avesse acconsentito.
"Compagno Xi Jinping, dal momento della vostra elezione a 18° segretario generale del Congresso Nazionale del partito, la vostra determinazione a combattere la corruzione da battitore di tigri ha portato a qualche miglioramento nella tendenza malsana della corruzione interna del partito", dice la lettera.
Dichiarava inoltre che la raccolta di tutto il potere nelle sue mani e prendere decisioni direttamente aveva portato a problemi in ogni sezione della società politica e civile.
Si lamentavano, "Nella gestione di Hong Kong, Macao, e dei problemi di Taiwan, la mancanza di conformità con il sapiente concetto del compagno Deng Xiaoping di un paese e due sistemi, ha creato un ulteriore dilemma, consentendo al Partito democratico progressista di conquistare il potere a Taiwan e lasciando crescere il sentimento d'indipendenza di Hong Kong."
La lettera cita anche i difetti nella leadership in campo politico, economico e ideologico nel governare il paese. "Riteniamo che lei non possieda le capacità per guidare il partito e la nazione verso il futuro, e noi crediamo che non siate più adatto per il posto di segretario generale."

16 arrested in connection with letter demanding Xi's resignation
Chinese authorities have reportedly arrested 16 people including the editor in chief of a state-run website in connection with a mysterious, hard-hitting letter posted online that besides criticizing Chinese president Xi Jinping demanded his resignation.
Four of those arrested, two top editors and two technicians, work for the state-run website Wujie News or Watching, that posted the letter on March 4, the day an annual political conclave in Beijing opened. 10 others who work with “a related technology company” have also been taken away.
Wen Yunchao, a Chinese activist living in New York, told the New York Times that his parents and younger brother in southern China had gone missing since Tuesday. The police, according to Wen, threatened his family that they must tell him what he knew about the letter.
The Chinese authorities also detained a noted freelance writer named Jia Jia, 35, minutes before he was to board a flight to Hong Kong on March 15. Jia’s family members and friends say he had nothing to do with the letter. On Friday night, a post appeared on Jia’s WeChat account that implied he had been freed. “Thank you, everyone,” it said.
Jia is a friend of Ouyang Hongliang, editor in chief of the website that posted the letter. According to the New York Times, people with knowledge of the situation say Jia called Ouyang asking him to take off the letter from Wujie after he noticed it circulating online.
The letter published on Wujie News website, jointly owned by SEEC Media Group, Alibaba and the government of Xinjiang, called president Xi Jinping to resign for his inability to tackle the unprecedented problems and crisis in all political, economic, ideological, and cultural spheres.
The letter had also mentioned the safety of the president and his family could be in jeopardy if not complied.
“Comrade Xi Jinping, since your election as General Secretary at the Party’s 18th National Congress, your determination to fight corruption by ‘beating tigers’ has led to some improvement in the unhealthy tendency of internal Party corruption,” the letter said.
It also stated his gathering of all the power in his hand and taking decisions directly had led to problems in every section of the political and civil society.
They complained, “In handling the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan problems, lack of compliance with Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s wise concept of ‘one country, two systems’ has created a further dilemma, allowing the Democratic Progressive Party to win power in Taiwan and letting sentiment of Hong Kong independence to rise.”
The letter also mentions the flaws in leadership in political, economic and ideological spheres to rule the country. “We feel that you do not possess the capabilities to lead the Party and the nation into the future, and we believe that you are no longer suitable for the post of General Secretary.” |
