Due potenti esplosioni a Mogadiscio uccidono almeno 10 persone

Testimoni hanno riferito che, almeno dieci persone sono state uccise e più di 30 sono rimaste ferite da due potenti esplosioni e spari nella capitale somala Venerdì sera.

I testimoni hanno riferito di un camion carico di esplosivo fatto esplodere ad un posto di blocco di sicurezza vicino all’Hotel SYL a Mogadiscio intorno alle ore 19:45 locali.

Il Ministro della sicurezza somalo Abdirizak Omar Mohamed ha detto a Voice Of America somala che cinque membri della National Security Agency sono rimasti uccisi al posto di blocco subito al primo impatto dell'esplosione. Aggiungendo che il conducente suicida è anch’egli morto.

Poco dopo, tre uomini armati sono scesi da una vettura e hanno iniziato a sparare, nel tentativo di forzare la loro strada dentro l’hotel SYL, ma le forze di sicurezza li hanno bloccati. Mohamed ha detto che le forze di sicurezza e le guardie dell’albergo hanno ucciso i tre militanti prima che raggiungessero l'hotel. I testimoni hanno confermato che i militanti di Al-Shabab non sono stati in grado di entrare nell’albergo. Mohamed ha elogiato le forze di sicurezza per la loro rapida azione.

Alle 20:15, una seconda piccola macchina usata dagli uomini armati è stata fatta esplodere provocando ulteriori vittime e danni e creando confusione sulla scena. Il governo della Somalia ha detto che aveva finora confermato la morte di 10 persone, di cui almeno 4 attaccanti. Testimoni e fonti della sicurezza riportano però che il numero di morti è aòmeno il doppio. I funzionari degli ospedali di Mogadiscio Medina e Dar-al-Shifa hanno riferito di aver ricevuto più di 30 persone che erano rimaste ferite; almeno sei di loro sono in gravi condizioni.

I funzionari della sicurezza dicono che l'esplosione iniziale del primo camion bomba è stata l'esplosione "più potente" che Al-Shabab ha utilizzato nella capitale Mogadiscio nel corso degli anni. "C'erano due veicoli pieni di esplosivo", ha detto un funzionario a VOA "Uno era parcheggiato proprio di fronte all'Hotel SYL. L'altro era un camion pieno di esplosivo fatto in casa stimato in 200 kg. Questo è quello che ha causato la maggior parte delle vittime, tra cui i cinque agenti."

Foto scattate dai giornalisti locali mostrano l’esplosione del camion bomba che scatena una enorme palla di fuoco sopra la città. Un testimone in un ristorante nel vicino Giardino della Pace ha parlato al giornalista di VOA a Mogadiscio, dicendo che l'impatto del camion bomba ha danneggiato le finestre e le pareti del ristorante. Ha detto che pensava l'esplosione fosse avvenuta all'interno del ristorante. Il giornalista VOA aggiunge  che l'esplosione ha danneggiato molti edifici nelle vicinanze. I militanti di al-Shabab hanno rivendicato l'attacco.

Two Powerful Explosions in Mogadishu Kill at Least 10

At least ten people were killed and more than 30 others were injured in two powerful explosions and gun fire in the Somali capital Friday evening, witnesses said.

Witnesses reported a truck filled with explosives was detonated at a security checkpoint near Hotel SYL in Mogadishu at around 7:45 p.m. local time.

Somali Security Minister Abdirizak Omar Mohamed told VOA Somali that five members of the national security agency were instantly killed at the checkpoint at the initial impact of the explosion. He said the suicidal driver was also killed.

Moments later, three gunmen got out of a car and started firing in an attempt to force their way into Hotel SYL, but security forces blocked them.

Mohamed said security forces and guards at the hotel shot and killed the three militants before they reached the hotel. Witnesses confirmed that the Al-Shabab militants were unable to enter the hotel. Mohamed praised the security forces for their quick action.

At 8:15 p.m., a second small car used by the gunmen was detonated causing further casualties and damage and creating confusion at the scene.

The Somalia government said it had so far confirmed the death of 10 people, including at least 4 attackers. Witnesses and security sources report the death toll is twice that number.

Officials at Medina and Dar-al-Shifa hospitals in Mogadishu reported receiving more than 30 people who were injured; at least six of them are in serious condition.  

Security officials say initial assessment of the explosion shows the first truck bomb was the "most powerful" explosion Al-Shabab has used in the capital Mogadishu over the years.

"There were two vehicles filled with explosive,” an official told VOA. “One was parked right in front of Hotel SYL; the other one was a truck filled with homemade explosives estimated to be containing 200kg of explosives. That is one that caused most of the casualties, including the five agents."

Pictures taken by local journalists show an explosion from the truck bomb sending a huge fireball over the city.

A witness at a restaurant in the nearby Peace Garden who spoke to the VOA reporter in Mogadishu says the impact of the truck bomb damaged the windows and walls of the restaurant. He said he thought the explosion happened inside the restaurant. A VOA reporter says the heavy blast damaged many nearby buildings.

Al-Shabab militants claimed responsibility for the attack.
