1.000 combattenti stranieri affollano la Siria ogni mese

Più di 1.000 jihadisti stranieri vanno in Siria e Iraq ogni mese, nonostante la continua campagna internazionale militare aerea.

I funzionari di intelligence e antiterrorismo degli Stati Uniti hanno detto che la campagna militare guidata dagli Stati Uniti contro lo Stato islamico dell'Iraq e della Siria (ISIS) non ha scoraggiato, né portato ad un aumento di militanti stranieri in viaggio per la Siria.

"Il flusso dei combattenti che si fanno strada verso la Siria rimane costante, in modo che il numero complessivo continua a crescere" Il Washington Post ha citato la dichiarazione di un funzionario dell'intelligence statunitense. Il tasso di 1.000 militanti al mese si è stabilizzato lo scorso anno, portando il numero totale di militanti stranieri in Siria a più di 16.000.

Secondo il rapporto del Washington Post il ritmo di questa migrazione è superiore a tendenze simili comparabili con conflitti passati, come la guerra in Afghanistan del 1980.

Un rapporto delle Nazioni Unite ha avvertito che la migrazione jihadista in Siria e in Iraq ha raggiunto cifre senza precedenti, con una stima di 15.000 combattenti stranieri al momento sul campo.

"I numeri dal 2010 superano ormai di molte volte la dimensione dei numeri cumulativi di combattenti terroristi stranieri nel ventennio precedente, 1990-2010, e sono in crescita"

Esperti di terrorismo sostengono che il numero di combattenti stranieri in Siria è probabile che continui a gonfiorsi.

"Non credo che 15.000 sia un numero realistico" dichiara Andrew Liepman, un esperto di antiterrorismo, citato dal Washington Post.

1,000 foreign fighters flock to Syria each month

More than 1,000 foreign jihadists are streaming into Syria and Iraq each month despite the ongoing international aerial military campaign there, the United States has warned.

U.S. intelligence and counterterrorism officials have said the U.S.-led military campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has neither deterred nor led to a surge of foreign militants travelling to Syria.

“The flow of fighters making their way to Syria remains constant, so the overall number continues to rise,” The Washington Post quoted a U.S. intelligence official as saying.

The rate of 1,000 militants a month was established over the past year, which would put the total number of foreign militants in Syria at more than 16,000.

The pace of this migration exceeds similar trends in comparable past conflicts, such as the Afghanistan war of the 1980s, according to the Washington Post report.

A U.N. report has warned that the jihadist migration to Syria and Iraq has reached "unprecedented scale," with an estimated 15,000 foreign fighters currently there.

“Numbers since 2010 are now many times the size of the cumulative numbers of foreign terrorist fighters between 1990 and 2010 – and are growing,”

Counter terrorism experts have said the number of foreign fighters in Syria is likely to continue swelling.

“I don’t think 15,000 really scratches the surface yet,” Andrew Liepman, a counterterrorism expert, was quoted by the Washington Post as saying.
