Al-Qaeda-linked ISIS fighters on Friday were locked in fighting in the rebel-held town of Atarib to the west of Aleppo, activist said, hours after an unverified statement purportedly issued by ISIS declared war against the Islamist Front. “Violent clashes are continuing between the militants of ISIS and the Islamic Front near the town of Atarib,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. “Clashes have [also erupted in] the outskirts of the town of Qabtan al-Jabal” north of Ararib, the NGO said. Meanwhile, the anti-regime Ugarit News Network said that “the Islamic Front detained 114 [ISIS] members following clashes in Atarib [and the nearby areas] of Qabtan al-Jabal, Al-Jineh and Ibin.” A video uploaded on YouTube showed a crowd gathering following the arrest of an ISIS commander in Atarib. The Islamic Front on Friday issued a statement calling on ISIS fighters to withdraw from Atarib. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported later in the afternoon that fighting also erupted between ISIS troops and Islamic Front fighters in Aleppo’s Al-Kalassa neighborhood. “ISIS has ordered its [fighters] to detonate car bombs at Islamic Front checkpoints that they cannot storm,” activists told the Observatory. Friday’s fighting comes after ISIS fighters on Wednesday tortured to death Hussein al-Sleiman, an Aleppo-area doctor also known as Abu Rayan. Activists in Aleppo and throughout the Idlib province held unprecedented protests following Friday’s communal Muslim prayers denouncing the doctor’s death and slamming ISIS. “A demonstration took place in the Salaheddine, Mashhad, and Al-Ansari al-Sharqi neighborhoods of Aleppo denouncing the acts of the regime and ISIS,” the Observatory said. “These demonstrations are the first of their kind in Aleppo.” Activists on Friday uploaded a series of videos from other neighborhoods in Aleppo and nearby towns in Idlib showing protests against the Al-Qaeda-linked ISIS. Meanwhile, protesters in the Idlib town of Kfar Takharim purportedly came under fire from ISIS fighters when they demonstrated against the group. “A demonstration began following the Friday prayers denouncing [ISIS’] assassination of Doctor Abou Rayan, which was met with another protest by armed members of ISIS,” the Ugarit News Network said. “ISIS members started shooting at the demonstration and protestors were in a state of complete panic,” it added. A video posted to YouTube showed scenes of panic in Kfar Takharim following the opening of live fire on the activists’ demonstration. The fighting in northern Syria follows a purported statement issued by ISIS calling Islamic Front and Free Syrian Army members “enemies of God” and authorizing their killing. Al-Arabiya cited Syrian Scholars Association deputy chief Sheikh Marwan al-Qadiri as saying that the statement is “unreliable.” However the scholar warned that “if the statement was proven to be true, it would be a grave mistake.”
