LAF e militanti si scontrano nei pressi di Arsal

Un soldato delle Forze Armate Libanese (LAF), risulta disperso in azione Giovedi, e altri quattro hanno dovuto essere salvati dopo che i militanti hanno teso un'imboscata ad una pattuglia dell'esercito nella zona montuosa tra la città recentemente contesa di Arsal e il confine siriano.

"In data odierna alle ore 11:00 un veicolo militare con cinque soldati all'interno è stato attaccato nella Valle Al-Rahwa di Arsal, durante un agguato effettuato da terroristi militanti", si legge in una dichiarazione del comando dell'esercito.

"Le forze armate hanno lanciato un attacco contro i militanti e sono stati in grado di salvare quattro soldati. Un soldato è scomparso a causa degli scontri e un altro è rimasto ferito." ha aggiunto il Comando dell'esercito.

La dichiarazione ha anche segnalato "la distruzione di un veicolo appartenente ai terroristi, che era armato con artiglieria anti-aerei da 23 millimetri."

L’agenzia di stato libanese National News Agency ha riferito che un soldato LAF è stato ucciso e altri tre feriti nei combattimenti, in un rapporto pubblicato in precedenza Giovedi.

Arsal è stata testimone di numerosi incidenti di sicurezza nel corso degli ultimi due giorni, compresi attacchi dell’Air Force siriana sulle posizioni ribelli vicino al confine, il rapimento di un residente di Arsal da parte di uomini armati siriani, e scontri tra la LAF e militanti nella vicina zona di Wadi Hmeid nella notte di Mercoledì.

L’agguato di oggi e i successivi scontri, sono gli sviluppi più gravi nella zona di Arsal, da quando la lotta tra LAF e i gruppi militanti siriani è scoppiata nella stessa città il 2 agosto.

Gruppi militanti hanno aperto il fuoco sulle posizioni dell'esercito e hanno preso d'assalto una stazione di polizia dopo che i soldati hanno arrestato un comandante jihadista.

Cinque giorni dopo, i militanti si ritirarono dalla città ridistribuendosi lungo il confine con la Siria, dopo una serie di scontri con l'esercito libanese che ha lasciato 19 soldati, 16 civili e decine di jihadisti morti.

Sono in corso negoziati per la liberazione di circa 24 militari e personale di sicurezza presi in ostaggio durante gli scontri.

Il Fronte Siriano di Al-Nusra, affiliato di Al-Qaeda, ha chiesto che il partito sciita libanese Hezbollah ritiri le sue forze dalla Siria e cessi il suo sostegno all'esercito siriano come condizione per la loro liberazione.

LAF, militants clash near Arsal

A (LAF) Lebanese Armed Forces soldier went missing in action Thursday, and four others had to be rescued after militants ambushed an army patrol in the mountainous area between the recently embattled town of Arsal and the Syrian border.

“On today’s date at 11 a.m. an army vehicle with five soldiers inside was attacked in Arsal’s Al-Rahwa Valley in an ambush carried out by militant terrorists,” read a statement from army command.

“Army forces launched an attack on the militants and were able to save four of soldiers.”

Army command added that: “One soldier went missing as a result of the clashes and another was injured.”

The statement also reported “the destruction of a vehicle belonging to the terrorists, which was armed with a 23mm anti-aircraft artillery gun.”

Lebanon’s state National News Agency said that an LAF soldier was killed and three others injured in the fighting, in a report released earlier on Thursday.

Arsal has witnessed several security incidents over the past two days, including Syrian air force strikes on rebel positions near the border, the kidnapping of an Arsal resident by Syrian gunmen, and clashes between the LAF and militants in the nearby Wadi Hmeid area on Wednesday night.

Today’s ambush and the subsequent clashes are the most serious development in the Arsal area since fighting between the LAF and Syrian militant groups erupted in the town itself on August 2.

Militant groups opened fire on army positions and stormed a police station after soldiers arrested a jihadist commander.

Five days later the militants withdrew from the town and redeployed along the border with Syria, after a series of clashes with the Lebanese army that left 19 soldiers, 16 civilians and dozens of jihadists dead.

Negotiations for the release of around 24 army and security personnel taken hostage in the clashes are ongoing.

Al-Qaeda’s Syrian franchise the Al-Nusra Front has demanded that Lebanese Shiite party Hezbollah withdraw its forces from Syria and cease its support for the Syrian army as a condition for their release.
