I rifugiati iracheni potrebbero sopraffare gli Stati vicini

Le Nazioni Unite hanno avvertito che i vicini dell'Iraq potrebbero essere sopraffatti dall’esodo di massa dei profughi in fuga dai disordini nel paese.

L'Alto Commissario delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati, Antonio Guterres, ha detto: "Non stiamo ancora assistendo ad un deflusso massiccio di rifugiati e penso che dipenderà dal fatto che questa crisi possa essere affrontata efficacemente in un futuro prossimo, ma se si trattasse di un lungo conflitto".

Egli ha espresso la sua preoccupazione che la Giordania, in particolare, non sarebbe in grado di far fronte. "La Giordania sta avendo l'enorme pressione dei profughi siriani, quindi è difficile pensare come quella regione possa far fronte a un altro grande deflusso di rifugiati … Ovviamente, se ciò si verificasse, mi auguro che gli iracheni possano essere ben accolti dappertutto. Ma, come ho detto, per il momento la cosa più importante è di evitarlo."

Guterres aggiunge che più lungo sarà il conflitto più inevitabili saranno i grandi spostamenti di rifugiati; evidenziando che non saranno in grado di cercare rifugio in Siria.

Secondo l'Alto Commissariato delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati, almeno 300.000 iracheni sono fuggiti dai combattimenti nella città settentrionale di Mosul e hanno cercato rifugio nella relativamente calma, regione autonoma del Kurdistan la scorsa settimana. Altri 500.000 iracheni sono sfollati all'interno del paese, dal momento che la lotta settaria divampava nella provincia irachena occidentale di Anbar nel mese di gennaio.

UN: Iraqi refugees could overwhelm neighbouring states

The United Nations has warned that Iraq's neighbours may be overwhelmed by the mass exodus of refugees fleeing unrest in the country.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, said: We are not yet witnessing a massive refugee outflow and I think it will depend on whether this crisis can be addressed effectively in the near future or whether it will be a protracted conflict."

He expressed his concern that Jordan, in particular, would be unable to cope. "Jordan is now having the enormous pressure of the Syrian refugees, so it's difficult to see how the region can cope with another big refugee outflow.

"Obviously, if that would occur, I would hope that Iraqis could be well received everywhere. But as I said, for the moment the most important thing is to avoid it."

Guterres said that the longer the conflict lasts the more inevitable it is that there will be major displacements of refugees once again; highlighting refugees will be unable to seek refuge in Syria.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, at least 300,000 Iraqis have fled the fighting in the northern city of Mosul and have sought shelter in the relatively calm, autonomous region of Kurdistan in the past week. Another 500,000 Iraqis are displaced within the country since sectarian fighting flared in the western Iraqi province of Anbar in January.
