Il massacro di Gaza è il prezzo di uno stato ebraico

Dieci anni fa, mentre Israele stava progettando il suo disimpegno unilaterale o separazione, dalla Striscia di Gaza, la cosiddetta comunità internazionale e l'industria del processo di pace allora fiorente, indulgeva in fantasie che il piccolo territorio potesse diventare una prospera Singapore nel Mediterraneo.

Gli strateghi israeliani non avevano tali illusioni. Anche se hanno fatto ritirare i loro 7.000 coloni da Gaza nel 2005, non hanno mai inteso una Gaza libera.

Le forze israeliane si erano semplicemente spostate dall'interno verso il perimetro, sostituendo l'occupazione diretta con quello che sarebbe divenuto un assedio ermetico.

Uno dei principali consiglieri di Ariel Sharon, il primo ministro israeliano che ha preso la decisione del disimpegno, era Arnon Soffer, demografo dell'Università di Haifa, noto come Arnon il contatore arabo, a causa della sua ossessione per la minaccia demografica, presumibilmente rappresentata dalle nascite di palestinesi. Il suo cognome, Soffer, significa "uno che conta" in ebraico.

In una ben conosciuta intervista al The Jerusalem Post un decennio fa, Soffer ha definito il futuro di Gaza una visione da incubo, ma quello che è stato terribilmente profetico ("E' la demografia, stupido", 21 maggio 2004, nota che l'intervista originale non è online, ma un follow up del 2007 che racconta le sue dichiarazioni del 2004 può essere trovato qui) .

Nel mio libro del 2006 One Country (85-86), la visione di Soffer è quanto ho spiegato, citando le sue parole dall'intervista:

Il vice primo ministro Ehud Olmert ha chiamato la soluzione unilaterale di Israele "grande speranza", ma Arnon Soffer ... ha offerto una prognosi meno ottimista. "La Separazione unilaterale non garantisce la pace", ha avvertito, "garantisce uno stato ebraico sionista, con una schiacciante maggioranza di ebrei." Quale sarà il prezzo di questo risultato? Il "giorno dopo la separazione unilaterale", Soffer ha detto, "i palestinesi ci bombarderanno con fuoco di artiglieria e noi dovremo reagire. Ma almeno la guerra sarà presso la recinzione, non nelle scuole materne di Tel Aviv e Haifa "Soffer era inequivocabile circa la risposta di Israele:". Diremo ai palestinesi che se un solo missile viene sparato oltre il recinto, ci sarà il fuoco di dieci in risposta. E le donne e i bambini saranno uccisi e le case saranno distrutte". Proseguendo lungo questa linea "quando 2,5 milioni di persone vivono in una Gaza chiusa, "Soffer predeisse, sarà una catastrofe umana. Quelle persone saranno animali ancora più grandi di quanto non siano oggi, con l'aiuto di un Islam fondamentalista e folle. La pressione alla frontiera sarà terribile. E sarà una guerra terribile. Quindi, se vogliamo rimanere in vita, dovremo uccidere e uccidere e uccidere. Tutto il giorno, ogni giorno."

Ho citato Soffer in un pezzo che ho scritto dopo il massacro di Gaza 2008-2009 e flo accio ancora adesso, perché le sue parole servono ancora come la più accurata, agghiacciante spiegazione della presente realtà.

Ma c'è una frase ancora più terrificante in un'intervista di Soffer che non ho incluso nel mio libro o negli articoli precedenti. "Se noi non uccidiamo, cesseremo di esistere", ha detto. "L'unica cosa che mi preoccupa è come garantire che i ragazzi e gli uomini che stanno per avere a che fare con quell'uccisione saranno in grado di tornare a casa dalle loro famiglie e di essere normali esseri umani.

Uccidere, uccidere e uccidere"

Un decennio più tardi, possiamo dire con certezza che Israele non è una società normale. E' chiaro che, al fine di "uccidere e uccidere e uccidere" la società israeliana ha dovuto disumanizzare i palestinesi in una misura senza precedenti.

Questo è forse ciò che spiega il grido pervasivo di "morte agli arabi", l'incitamento incessante da parte dei politici e personaggi pubblici, e l'insofferenza per qualsiasi dissenso dal consenso schiacciante a favore del massacro di Gaza. C'è un livello di disumanizzazione che consente al legislatore Ayelet Shaked, una stella nascente, di chiamare all'abbattimento delle madri di Gaza perché danno vita a "piccoli serpenti" senza affrontare ripercussioni negative.

E così ora ci sono stati tre grandi massacri di Gaza (e molti più piccoli) in quanto al disimpegno: del 2008-2009 " Operation Cast Lead," il massacro di novembre 2012, e l'orrore in corso che ha provocato oltre 825 vite in 18 giorni di incessante bombardamento.

Gran parte della società israeliana ha deciso che questo è un prezzo da pagare per mantenere uno stato ebraico. E i grandi gruppi ebrei pro-Israele negli Stati Uniti hanno fatto la stessa scelta. Il Liberal sionista Peter Beinart recentemente si è lamentato che i capi della comunità ebraica americana organizzata erano pronti a difendere Israele, non importa quello che ha fatto.

"Più terribili le foto da Gaza diventano, più categoricamente insistono che Israele non ha alcuna responsabilità per loro", recentemente ha scritto sulla sua pagina Facebook. "C’è qualcuno che possa dire, con fiducia, che non vi è alcuna azione che il governo israeliano metta in atto, che i leader ebrei americani non cercheranno di giustificare? Non c’è, e questo mi terrorizza."

Massacri regolari

E' tempo per tutti di capire cosa Soffer e i leader ebrei americani come Beinart, prendono di mira, per aver compreso ed abbracciato: il prezzo di uno "stato ebraico" è la violazione permanente e irrevocabile dei diritti dei palestinesi, e se questo significa massacri regolari, allora così sia.

Come spiego nel mio ultimo libro La battaglia per la giustizia in Palestina, Israele non può esistere "in quanto stato ebraico", senza violare i diritti di tutti i palestinesi a vari livelli (leggi l'estratto in questione).

Il massacro a Gaza è alla fine estrema dello spettro degli abusi necessari per mantenere la regola settario ebraica in Palestina, ma è parte della stessa politica che richiede l'occupazione e la discriminazione abitativa contro i cittadini palestinesi di Israele, e il furto della terra a titolo definitivo e la pulizia etnica nel Negev e la Cisgiordania occupata.

Se sostenete il diritto ad esistere come stato ebraico di Israele in un paese le cui persone indigene palestinesi sono oggi la metà della popolazione, allora, come Soffer, dovrete fare i conti con l'inevitabilità dei massacri.

Se ti opponi ai terribili massacri ripetuti, a Gaza, aderisci al movimento per il boicottaggio, disinvestimento e sanzioni (BDS), un movimento che mira a decolonizzare la Palestina e al ripristino di tutte le persone con tutti i loro diritti legittimi e inalienabili.

The Gaza massacre is the price of a “Jewish state”

Ten years ago, as Israel was planning its unilateral “disengagement” or “separation” from the Gaza Strip, the so-called international community and the then-thriving peace process industry indulged in fantasies that the small territory might become a prosperous “Singapore on the Mediterranean.”

Israeli strategists had no such illusions. Although they did withdraw their 7,000 settlers from Gaza in 2005, they never intended to set Gaza free.

Israeli forces were merely moved from the interior to the perimeter, replacing direct occupation with what eventually became a hermetic siege.

One of the key advisers to Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister who took the decision to “disengage,” was Arnon Soffer, the Haifa University demographer – known as Arnon the Arab Counter for his obsession with the “demographic threat” supposedly posed by the births of Palestinians. (His last name, soffer, means “someone who counts” in Hebrew.)

In a notorious interview in The Jerusalem Post a decade ago, Soffer set out a nightmarish vision of Gaza’s future, but one that was horrifyingly prescient (“It’s the demography, stupid,” 21 May 2004 – note the original interview is not online but a 2007 follow up which recounts his 2004 statements can be found here).

In my 2006 book One Country (85-86), this is how I explained Soffer’s vision, quoting his words from the interview:

[Then deputy prime minister Ehud] Olmert called the unilateral solution Israel’s “great hope,” but Arnon Soffer … offered a less optimistic prognosis. “Unilateral separation doesn’t guarantee ‘peace,’” he warned, “it guarantees a Jewish-Zionist state with an overwhelming majority of Jews.” What will be the price of this achievement? The “day after unilateral separation,” Soffer said, “the Palestinians will bombard us with artillery fire – and we will have to retaliate. But at least the war will be at the fence – not in the kindergartens of Tel Aviv and Haifa.” Soffer was unambiguous about Israel’s response: “We will tell the Palestinians that if a single missile is fired over the fence, we will fire ten in response. And women and children will be killed and houses will be destroyed.” Further down the line, “when 2.5 million people live in a closed off Gaza,” Soffer predicted, “it’s going to be a human catastrophe. Those people will be even bigger animals than they are today, with the aid of an insane fundamentalist Islam. The pressure at the border will be awful. It’s going to be a terrible war. So, if we want to remain alive, we will have to kill and kill and kill. All day, every day.”

I quoted Soffer in a piece I wrote after the 2008-2009 Gaza massacre and do so again now because his words still serve as the most accurate, chilling explanation of the present reality.

But there is an even more horrifying sentence in Soffer’s interview that I didn’t include in my book or earlier piece. “If we don’t kill, we will cease to exist,” he said. “The only thing that concerns me is how to ensure that the boys and men who are going to have to do the killing will be able to return home to their families and be normal human beings.”

“Kill and kill and kill”

A decade later, we can say with certainty that Israel is not a “normal” society. It is clear that in order to “kill and kill and kill,” Israeli society has had to dehumanize Palestinians to an unprecedented extent.

This is perhaps what explains the pervasive cry of “death to the Arabs,” the relentless incitement by politicians and public figures, and the intolerance for any dissent from the crushing consensus in favor of the Gaza slaughter. There is a level of dehumanization that allows lawmaker Ayelet Shaked, a rising star, to call for the slaughter of mothers in Gaza because they give birth to “little snakes” and face no negative repercussions.

And so now there have been three major Gaza massacres (and many smaller ones) since the disengagement: 2008-2009’s “Operation Cast Lead,” the November 2012 massacre, and the ongoing horror that has claimed more than 825 lives in 18 days of relentless bombardment.

Much of Israeli society has decided that this is a price worth paying to maintain a “Jewish state.” And the major US pro-Israel Jewish groups have made the same choice.

“Liberal” Zionist Peter Beinart recently lamented that the leaders of the “organized American Jewish community” were ready to defend Israel no matter what they did.

“The more ghastly the photos from Gaza become, the more adamantly they insist that Israel bears no responsibility for them,” he recently wrote on his Facebook page. “Can anyone say, with confidence, that there is any action the Israeli government could take that American Jewish leaders would not seek to justify? I can’t, and that terrifies me.”

Regular massacres

It is time for everyone to understand what Soffer and the American Jewish leaders Beinart takes aim at have understood and embraced: the price of a “Jewish state” is the permanent and irrevocable violation of Palestinians’ rights, and if that means regular massacres, then so be it.

As I explain in my recent book The Battle for Justice in Palestine, Israel cannot exist “as a Jewish state” without violating the rights of all Palestinians to varying degrees (read the relevant excerpt).

The massacre in Gaza is at the extreme end of the spectrum of abuses necessary to maintain Jewish sectarian rule in Palestine, but it is part of the same policy that requires employment and housing discrimination against Palestinian citizens of Israel, and outright land theft and ethnic cleansing in the Naqab (Negev) and the occupied West Bank.

If you support Israel’s “right to exist as a Jewish state” in a country whose indigenous Palestinian people today form half the population, then you, like Soffer, must come to terms with the inevitability of massacres.
