Kerry annuncia 72 ore di cessate il fuoco a Gaza

Israele e Hamas hanno concordato un cessate il fuoco di 72 ore nel conflitto di Gaza, lo ha dichiarato il segretario di Stato Usa John Kerry nelle prime ore di Venerdì.

Kerry ha detto che le due parti avrebbero cominciato la tregua alle 08:00 ora locale e che israeliani e palestinesi entreranno in colloquio al Cairo.

Il capo della diplomazia Usa ha detto che il cessate il fuoco sarebbe durato per 72 ore salvo proroga.

"Durante questo periodo le forze sul terreno resteranno sul campo … Questo cessate il fuoco è fondamentale per dare ai civili innocenti una tregua tanto necessaria dalla violenza" ha detto, a metà mattina, Kerry in una dichiarazione organizzata in tutta fretta durante una visita a New Delhi.

Kerry ha annunciato la tregua in collaborazione con il Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite Ban Ki-moon che ha, anch’egli, investito intensi sforzi nella mediazione del sanguinoso conflitto.

"Durante questo periodo, i civili di Gaza riceveranno assistenza umanitaria urgente, e la possibilità di svolgere funzioni vitali, tra cui seppellire i morti, aver cura dei feriti, e rifornimento di cibo", ha detto Kerry.

"Riparazioni essenziali, nonostante il ritardo, per l’acqua e le infrastrutture energetiche potrebbero anche continuare durante questo periodo."

Kerry ha detto inoltre di aver lavorato al telefono con il Medio Oriente da Nuova Delhi, nella speranza di fermare il conflitto, che ha ucciso circa 1.435 persone nell'arco di 24 giorni, in gran parte civili palestinesi.

Israele ha lanciato l'offensiva l'8 luglio con l'obiettivo dichiarato di porre fine al lancio di razzi di Hamas, il gruppo militante islamico che di fatto controlla la Striscia di Gaza così densamente popolata.

Israele ha ampliato l'offensiva il 17 luglio con una operazione di terra, il cui scopo ufficiale era quello di distruggere una sofisticata rete di tunnel transfrontalieri.

L'annuncio della tregua è venuto, anche se l'esercito israeliano ha mobilitato altri 16.000 riservisti, portando il numero totale di soldati richiamati fino a 86.000. Israele non dice quante truppe stanno attualmente combattendo all'interno della Striscia di Gaza.

Il Consiglio di Sicurezza dell'ONU ha chiesto la pause umanitaria a Gaza e ha rinnovato il suo appello per un immediato cessate il fuoco, anche se ripetuti appelli per una tregua sono rimasti inascoltati.

Kerry announces 72-hour ceasefire in Gaza

Israel and Hamas have agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, US Secretary of State John Kerry said early Friday.

Kerry said that the two sides would begin the truce at 8:00 a.m. local time and that Israelis and Palestinians would enter talks in Cairo.

The top US diplomat said the ceasefire would last for 72 hours "unless extended."

"During this time the forces on the ground will remain in place," Kerry said.

"This ceasefire is critical to giving innocent civilians a much-needed reprieve from violence," Kerry said in a hastily arranged mid-morning statement on a visit to New Delhi.

Kerry said he was announcing the truce jointly with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who has also invested intense efforts in brokering an end to the bloody conflict.

"During this period, civilians in Gaza will receive urgently needed humanitarian relief, and the opportunity to carry out vital functions, including burying the dead, taking care of the injured, and restocking food supplies," Kerry said.

"Overdue repairs on essential water and energy infrastructure could also continue during this period."

Kerry said he had been working the phones with the Middle East from New Delhi in hopes of brokering a halt to the conflict, which has killed some 1,435 people over 24 days, largely Palestinian civilians.

Israel launched the offensive on July 8 with the stated goal of ending rocket fire from Hamas, the Islamist militant group that effectively controls the densely populated Gaza Strip.

Israel expanded the offensive on July 17 with a ground operation, the official purpose of which was to destroy a sophisticated network of cross-border tunnels.

The announcement of the truce came even though the Israeli army has mobilized another 16,000 reservists, hiking the total number of soldiers called up to 86,000. Israel does not say how many troops are currently fighting inside the Gaza Strip.

The UN Security Council has called for humanitarian pauses in Gaza and renewed its appeal for an immediate ceasefire, even though repeated appeals for a truce had gone unheeded.
