Quando un cessate il fuoco umanitario, diventa una trappola mortale

Alle 14:06 ora locale, l'ufficio del portavoce militare israeliano ha inviato due messaggi in successione attraverso il suo Twitter:

Il primo:

14:06 - 30 Luglio 2014 - IDFSpokesperson

L'IDF ha aperto una finestra umanitaria a Gaza dalle 15:00 alle 19:00. Finestra che non si applica alle aree in cui i soldati israeliani operano.

La seconda:

14:06 - 30 Luglio 2014 - IDFSpokesperson

I residenti non devono tornare alle aree che sono state evacuate. L’IDF risponderà a qualsiasi tentativo di attaccare Israele.

A parte l’enigma nel secondo Tweet (che tornare a casa sia, in qualche modo, attaccare Israele), quello che abbiamo è esattamente il tipo di catch-22 che Joseph Heller*, che ha coniato la frase dopo aver vissuto nella II Guerra Mondiale, intendeva.

Si tratta di un quadrato impossibile da contenere in un cerchio. Ed è letale.

Alle 07:01, il corrispondente Sky News, Sherine Tadros, ha twittato di un attacco aereo sul mercato in Shejaiya. Dodici minuti più tardi, l'Associated Press ha detto che 15 erano i morti e oltre 150 i feriti in quello che è stato riportato come un attacco israeliano sul mercato operoso.

Il numero è aumentato da allora.

E' un tempo da raccontare a Gaza. I portavoce analizzano le frasi a scapito degli innocenti. E le finestre umanitarie esplodono in schegge di ossa e carne.

Gaza catch-22: When a humanitarian ceasefire becomes a death trap

At 14:06 local time, the office of the Israeli military spokesperson sent two messages in succession through its Twitter feed:

The first:

2:06 PM - 30 Jul 2014 - IDFSpokesperson

The IDF has opened a humanitarian window in Gaza from 15:00 to 19:00. Window does not apply to areas where IDF soldiers are operating.

The second:

2:06 PM - 30 Jul 2014 – IDFSpokesperson Gaza residents must not return to areas from which they have been asked to evacuate. IDF will respond to any attempt to attack Israel.

Set aside the head-scratching leap in the second tweet (that to return home is to somehow “attack Israel”), and what you have is exactly the kind of catch-22 that Joseph Heller, who coined the phrase after living through World War II, intended.

It is a square impossible to circle. And it is lethal.

At 7:01 p.m., Sky News correspondent Sherine Tadros tweeted about an airstrike on a market in Shejaiya. Twelve minutes later, the Associated Press said that 15 were dead and more than 150 wounded in what it reported was an Israeli attack on the busy market.

The number has since risen.

It’s a telling time in Gaza. Spokespersons parse sentences at the expense of innocents. And humanitarian windows explode into shards of bone and flesh.
