Nick Clegg chiede la sospensione delle licenze per l'esportazione di armi verso Israele

In risposta alle dimissioni della baronessa Warsi come ministro del Foreign Office, il leader dei liberal democratici e Vice Primo Ministro Nick Clegg ha chiesto che le esportazioni di armi verso Israele vengano sospese.

Nick ha detto:

"Penso che i punti interrogativi che Sayeeda Warsi ha sollevato sulle licenze per le esportazione di armi, che emettiamo agli esportatori che vendono a Israele, sono molto gravi e condivido le sue preoccupazioni … E' ovvio che per quanto Israele abbia tutto il diritto di difendersi dagli attacchi missilistici di Hamas, tuttavia l'operazione militare israeliana di Gaza ha oltrepassato il segno. Lo spettacolo scandaloso di tre scuole delle Nazioni Unite colpite da un'azione militare israeliana. Ecco perché credo che le licenze di esportazione dovrebbero ora essere sospese. Sto lavorando con Vince Cable su questo. Il suo dipartimento, che gestisce queste licenze di esportazione, e lui e io crediamo che le azioni dei militari israeliani, a Gaza, abbiano oltrepassando il segno, violando le condizioni di tali licenze di esportazione e per questo vogliamo vederle sospese in attesa di una revisione più ampia, che accerti se dovrebbero essere revocate in modo permanente nel lungo periodo … Credo che saremo in grado di fare un annuncio su questo, infine, molto presto. C'è voluto un pò più di quanto mi sarebbe piaciuto, per avere l’accordo di tutto il governo, ma penso che sia molto importante che in risposta a quello che sembra chiaramente essere un’azione militare sproporzionata, di Israele a Gaza, dovremmo sospendere le licenze per le esportazione di armi, che attualmente esistono."

Vince Cable ha aggiunto:

"Sia io che Nick Clegg siamo d'accordo che dovremmo sospendere le licenze di esportazione delle attrezzature militari che possono essere utilizzate da Israele a Gaza. Abbiamo posto questo caso all'interno del governo, ma non siamo ancora stati in grado di raggiungere un accordo per questa posizione. Spero e mi aspetto che l’accordo si trovi a breve".

Nick Clegg calls for suspension of licences for arms exports to Israel

In response to Baroness Warsi's resignation as foreign office minister, Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has called for arms exports to Israel to be suspended. 

Nick said:

"I think the question marks that Sayeeda Warsi has raised about the arms export licences which we issue to arms exporters selling to Israel are very serious ones and I share her concerns.

"It’s obvious to me that however much Israel has every right to defend itself from those rocket attacks from Hamas, nonetheless the Israeli military operation overstepped the mark in Gaza. This outrageous spectacle of these three UN schools being hit by Israeli military action. That’s why I believe that the export licences should now be suspended. I’m working with Vince Cable on this. It is his department that administers these export licences and he and I both believe the actions of the Israeli military, overstepping the mark in Gaza, breach the conditions of those export licenses and that’s why we want to see them suspended pending a wider review of whether they should be revoked more permanently in the long run.

"I believe we will be able to make an announcement on this, finally, very shortly. It’s taken a little bit longer than I’d like to have this agreed across government but I think it’s very important that in response to clearly what appears to be disproportionate military action of Israel in Gaza, we should be suspending the arms export licenses that presently exist."

Vince Cable added: 

"Both Nick Clegg and I agree that we should suspend export licences for military equipment that might be used by Israel in Gaza. We have been making this case inside Government but have not yet been able to get agreement for this position. I hope and expect that to change shortly."
