Golan said in comments published Wednesday that although Assad “lost control over 60 percent” of Syrian territory, he can resist rebel advances due to Russian military supplies. He also said that the regime’s army suffered 15,000 fatalities during the over two-year old civil war, adding that regime troops fired somewhere between 40 to 50 percent of its long-range rockets. The Israeli military commander echoed outgoing Israeli envoy to Washington Michael Oren’s comments Tuesday that Tel Aviv wants the Assad regime to fall. "The Syrian enemy, with Hezbollah and of course with a regional power like Iran in the background, is a far more dangerous enemy than elements of the Global Jihad,” Golan said in reference to the Al-Qaeda affiliated rebels fighting in Syria.
