Il bisogno è in crescita e l’appello all’azione sta diventando impossibile da ignorare! L’Azione diretta nonviolenta può aiutare a ristabilire un equilibrio in cui i nostri diritti sono stati superati dagli interessi privati delle potenti élite economiche, disposte a sacrificare il futuro dei nostri figli per il loro profitto a breve termine. Azioni pacifiche di disobbedienza civile sono state al centro di molti grandi lotte che l’umanità ha combattuto nel corso degli ultimi decenni: la lotta contro l'apartheid in Sud Africa, il movimento dei diritti civili negli Stati Uniti e la lotta di Gandhi contro il dominio coloniale britannico in India, per citare solo alcuni esempi. Immaginate un mondo senza la disobbedienza civile e l'azione diretta nonviolenta. Se fosse è troppo astratto e difficile da immaginare, provate questo: immaginate un mondo in cui le donne non possono ancora votare, dove la segregazione razziale e la discriminazione istituzionalizzata è ancora una regola, immaginate il brutale dominio coloniale e l'estrema iniquità e l'ingiustizia sociale in tutto il mondo. E mentre in alcuni luoghi dobbiamo guardare al passato per trovare esempi scandalosi di ingiustizia e di disuguaglianza, non dimentichiamo che ci sono ancora molti posti in cui tali realtà inquietanti rimangono a tuttoggi la norma. Le azioni parlano più forte delle parole e le azioni sono necessarie ora più che mai data la minaccia che il nostro pianeta si trova ad affrontare come conseguenza dello sfruttamento ambientale e sociale dilagante. La disobbedienza civile e l'azione diretta sono il cuore di quello che facciamo qui a Greenpeace, parte del nostro patrimonio e della storia, il nostro destino e la nostra missione. La disobbedienza civile non richiede eroi - ma solo uomini e donne decenti per dire 'basta basta'. Mentre con Greenpeace, ho intrapreso l'azione diretta nelle acque gelide del Mar Glaciale Artico due volte. Ho scalato le piattaforme petrolifere per rappresentare la voce e le preoccupazioni di milioni di persone che dicono che la perforazione nell’Artico è follia e deve essere fermata. Ho anche trascorso del tempo in prigione per questo - ma la lotta non è finita, e continuerò a sostenere il movimento Artico per fermare le ambizioni irresponsabili delle grandi compagnie petrolifere. Ma questa è qualcosa di più di una semplice pausa dalla lotta alle grandi compagnie petrolifere, si tratta di creare un mondo in cui le generazioni future possano prosperare, un mondo pacifico, giusto ed equo. La disobbedienza civile sembra penetrare nella coscienza dei nostri leader politici molto di più rispetto ad altri metodi. La pressione pubblica che viene dalla disobbedienza civile può inclinare l'opinione pubblica e ristabilire l'equilibrio tra il potere del popolo e i portafogli delle società private che sacrificano le considerazioni ambientali a lungo termine per i profitti a breve termine. I leader politici si rendono conto che hanno bisogno di ascoltare - se non altro perché è la cosa giusta da fare, almeno per paura di perdere i loro mandati e le loro posizioni. Un grande ringraziamento a tutti gli attivisti là fuori che promuovono la causa ambientale, che si tratti di combattere per portare giustizia alle comunità locali in Nigeria che soffrono per le fuoriuscite di petrolio Shell o di fermare la pipeline Keystone XL negli Stati Uniti! Lo Slancio della disobbedienza civile sta crescendo - ma molto di più è necessario fare per evitare catastrofici cambiamenti climatici, la distruzione ambientale e il degrado. http://www.greenpeace.org Time for civil disobedience The tradition of civil disobedience is being reignited. The need is growing and the call to action is becoming impossible to ignore! Non-violent direct action can help re-establish a balance where our rights have been overtaken by the self interest of powerful economic elites, willing to sacrifice our children’s future for their short term gain and profit. Peaceful acts of civil disobedience have been at the heart of many major struggles humanity has fought over the past several decades: the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, the Civil Rights movement in the US and Gandhi’s fight against British colonial rule in India, to mention just a few examples. Imagine a world without civil disobedience and non-violent direct action. If that’s too abstract and difficult to imagine, try this: imagine a world where women still can’t vote, where racial segregation and institutionalised discrimination still rule, imagine brutal colonial dominance and extreme inequity and social injustice across the globe. And while in some places we have to look to the past to find such outrageous examples of injustice and inequality, let's not forget that there are still many places where such disturbing realities remain the norm to this day. Actions do speak louder than words and actions are needed now more than ever given the threat that our planet is facing as a result of rampant environmental and social exploitation. Civil disobedience and direct action are at the heart of what we do here at Greenpeace, part of our heritage and history, our destiny and mission. Civil disobedience does not require heroes – it only takes decent men and women to say ‘enough is enough’. While with Greenpeace, I have taken direct action in the freezing waters of the Arctic Ocean twice. I have climbed oilrigs to represent the voice and concerns of millions of people saying that Arctic drilling is madness and must be stopped. I have even spent time in jail for this – but the fight is not over, and I will continue to support the Save the Arctic movement to stop Big Oil’s irresponsible ambitions. But this is about more than just stopping Big Oil; it’s about creating a world in which future generations can thrive, a world that is peaceful, just and equitable. Civil disobedience seems to penetrate the consciousness of our political leaders much more than other methods. The public pressure that comes from civil disobedience can tilt public opinion and re-establish the balance between people power and the deep wallets of private companies sacrificing long-term environmental considerations for short-term profits. Political leaders can realise that they need to listen – if not because it’s the right thing to do, at least for fear of losing their mandates and positions. A big thank you to all activists out there advancing the environmental cause, whether it’s fighting to bring justice to local communities in Nigeria suffering from Shell oil spills or stopping the Keystone XL pipeline in the US! Civil disobedience momentum is building – but much more is needed to avert catastrophic climate change and environmental destruction and degradation. Please join me and take action too!
