Nel bel mezzo degli sforzi USA per salvare i negozoati di pace, iniziati di recente, l’Autorità Palestinese teme che i coloni ebrei stiano provando ad incendiare la regione prendendo di mira le Moschee e le piantagioni di olive. Una Moschea nel villaggio palestinese di Beit Fajar, a nord della città di Hebron, è stata incendiata lunedì mattina e, secondo le testimonianze palestinesi, graffiti blasfemi che bestemmiavano il profeta Maometto sono stati scritti su diversi muri delle case del villaggio. Nel pomeriggio dozzine di coloni si sono radunati vicino al villaggio di Burin chiedendo la distruzione della locale Moschea. Accusando l’uso del minareto per osservarli e quindi metterli in pericolo. Ghassan Daglas, funzionario palestinese, afferma che la dimostrazione di Burin è indicativa delle intenzioni dei coloni di incendiare la regione nel tentativo di sabotare i negoziati di pace. Dichiara inoltre che le iniziative dei coloni contro i villaggi palestinesi si intensificano ogni volta che appare un varco nei negoziati. - Le vessazioni contro i palestinesi aumentano quando ci sono sviluppi diplomatici, o anche quando gli inviati americani o di altre rappresentanze visitano la regione, questo sempre con l’intenzione di attentare al processo di pace.- Lo sforzo dei coloni è in continua crescita e il loro numero rende impossibile alla leadership israeliana di ignorare le loro posizioni; quindi la loro influenza sul processo di pace è evidente oltre che rilevante. Daglas continua dicendo che nella West Bank l’obiettivo dei coloni è anche quello di distruggere le piantagioni di olive, che sono sacre per i palestinesi almeno quanto le Moschee sono sacre per i musulmani. Hanno già incendiato le Moschee di Yasouf e Luban, e questa mattina quella di Beit Fajar, queste azioni segnalano inoltre che stanno cercando di portare il conflitto sul piano religioso. Il Governo palestinese condanna gli incendi e mette in guardia sui continui attacchi terroristici dei coloni contro la popolazione palestinese. Il Ministro della Difesa Ehud Barak dichiara che: - Chiunque abbia commesso questi atti terroristici ha il solo scopo di colpire l’occasione di pace con i palestinesi. Il Primo Ministro Benjamin Netanyauh chiede di arrestare i criminali il prima possibile e di tradurli davanti ad un tribunale. |

A mosque in the Palestinian village of Beit Fajar, north of the West Bank city of Hebron, was set on fire Monday morning, and according to Palestinian sources, graffiti blaspheming the Prophet Mohammad was sprayed on several of the building's walls. Later Monday, dozens of settlers gathered near Burin and demanded that the mosque in the Palestinian village be destroyed. They claimed the minaret is used to follow the settlers' movement and therefore endangers them. "The demonstration in Burin is indicative of the settlers' plan to ignite the region in order to sabotage the negotiations," said Palestinian official Ghassan Daglas. According to him, the Palestinians have identified increased activity on the part of the settlers whenever there seems to be a breakthrough in the peace talks. "The settler harassments increase whenever there is some sort of diplomatic development or when the American envoy and other representatives visit the region in an attempt to jumpstart the (peace) process," he said. "The settlers' strength is growing, and their numbers make it impossible for any leadership in Israel to ignore them and their positions; therefore, their influence on the diplomatic process is evident." Daglas said the West Bank's Jews are purposely targeting agricultural fields and olive groves, which he says are "sacred to the Palestinians," as well as mosques, which are "sacred to Muslims." "They torched the mosques in Yasouf and Luban, and this morning they set the mosque in Beit Fajar on fire. This shows they are trying to divert the conflict to its religious aspect," he said. The Palestinian government condemned the torching and warned of "continued terrorist activity by the settlers against the Palestinian people." Defense Minister Ehud Barak said, "Whoever committed this act is a terrorist whose only goal is to hurt the chances for peace with the Palestinians." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called to "apprehend the criminals as soon as possible and put them on trial."
