Dozens of people suffered from tear gas in the weekly protest of Al-Ma'sara village
This week's demonstration in Al Ma'sara against the Israeli occupation fell on the anniversary of the 1917 Balfour Declaration. As one of the members of the Popular Committee of Al Ma'sara reminded the demonstrators, the violation of international law and human rights continues to this day, as more land is confiscated through the construction of settlements and the Apartheid Wall, and peaceful resistance is repressed with violence on the part of Israeli forces.
As has sadly been the practice for over four years, the IOF soldiers immediately blocked the protest march and began launching sound bombs among the nonviolent protesters, which included Palestinians and Israeli activists from Anarchists Against the Wall as well as internationals from Canada, Italy, Sweden, South Africa, The Netherlands, Scotland, England and the United States.
Following a short but tense pause, as the activists regrouped and held their ground defending the Palestinians' right to protest, the soldiers once again began to hurl sound bombs as well as tear gas in the midst of the protestors, whose hands were held high signifying the nonviolent nature of the demonstration. The continued chants of "do not shoot" fell on deaf ears as the soldiers charged the demonstration, firing tear gas canisters at close range, endangering the protesters.
The weekly demonstrations in Al Ma'sara, as in many other West Bank villages, will continue as long as Israel fails to respect international law.
