http://www.youtube.com/user/rubberjungles Rubber Jungle - Feature Documentary Film Sometimes called "The Ghandi of the Amazon" Chico Mendes was a Rubber Tapper who lived and worked in Brazil's Amazon region. During the 1980's Chico became a politiical activist interested in protecting the rights of Rubber Tappers against the invasion of cattle ranchers. His struggle caught the attention of international environmentalists who saw Chico's resistance movement as a fight to save the rainforest. Chico and the ecologists worked together for a short period, but then Chico was murdered by ranching interests in late1988. This news, which appeared on the front page of the New York York Times, set off a feeding frenzy of movie producers anxious to tell the story of Chico as an eological martyr. Warner Brothers won the rights to make the movie and spent over 7 million dollars preparing their epic. But then the movie studio abruptly cancelled the project. And that is where our film RUBBER JUNGLE begins. It is a journey up the Amazon river that is as much about the natural history of rubber as it is about who Chico Mendes really was and why Hollywood couldn't make a big budget movie out of his story. We think it is a story that lies at the heart of why the Amazon rainforest continues to burn while the whole world agrees it should be saved.
